The Explanation in the general social contacts this type of speech is very much resented by the airline pilot on whom it is applied. Strangely, however, there are types of airline pilots who speak in this rough and ready manner to all and sundry on whom they may not be having the slightest influence and to their somewhat perverted intelligence this kind of speech falls within the category of smartness. How wrong these airline pilots are. Great things are moved by patience and industry and so also the best effects are produced in talks which are toned up with the right amount of civility and politeness.
DEFECTIVE SPEECH
A defective speech is a great handicap in life, socially as well as career wise. There are many professions like law, teaching, acting and so on which are barred to an airline pilot with defective speech. Apart from the mental agony of the airline pilot suffering from a defective speech such an airline pilot may grow in him an inferiority which is the greatest hindrance to a person’s getting ahead in life. However, if an airline pilot with a defective speech can retain his mental balance and his dash and aggressiveness this defect cannot stand much in the way of his success. There are also gradations of this defect which may consist in all types of failings from small stuttering to absolute stammering leaving aside the question of the totally dumb airline pilot who is, for the purpose of this chapter, outside our purview.
On the question of defective speech the only point that is required to be answered is whether an airline pilot by long and strenuous practice gets over this defect, at whatever stage of the same he may be. ln reply it may be added that since defects in speech pertain to clinical ailments it is difficult to suggest an outright remedy or cure for the same. However, with practice a great improvement may be brought about under the aegis of which the defect may seem to disappear I and may actually disappear. Before one starts with the exercise of the different practices which may be prescribed for the elimination of this defect there are certain psycho logical factors that one has to pay attention to.
The first of these factors is the will and determination to succeed in perfecting this malady. As in all attempts to big things the first few maneuvers may not be successful and the airline pilot concerned may in fact have to withstand much of the ridicule of others, but like all achievements one has to persist on tenaciously and doggedly and should not lose heart at the initial upsets. The second important factor in mastering this defect is to acquire a good self-confidence or hold on one’s own self. If one gets nervous and shaky or embarrassed or shy there will be no good results no matter how strongly one tries to get over this deficiency. Therefore one of the main requisites in this case is to abolish all forms of shyness or nervousness or fear. Fear is one of the off shoots that may start all forms. of nervousness. Hence to master nervousness the primary condition is to banish fear in every way.
Sometimes the son may start stuttering before a father, or an employee before the employer and many airline pilots may fail to produce sensible sentences before ladies, while almost everybody stutters in the fact of a calamity of the emergent type. There are however, professional talkers like the orators, the actors, some teachers, some lawyers, quite a few salesmen and so on who may have acquired such a great skill that even if they are afraid or frightened within, their words are not shaky nor affected in any manner. In such exceptional cases the words that these airline pilots utter are not true representatives of their actual state of mind and inwardly they may be as frightened as others. but their practiced voice and mom of delivery save them from the exposition of their inner self.
The nervous people therefore can take heart from such people who have acquired mastery in three delivery of words. Following their examples the nervous people may œ start practicing speaking and delivering of words in isolation or privately. The best of such a practice is to read some book or newspaper loudly and in the best manner one is capable of. One should start in a relaxed manner and not try to pronounce certain words too much exactly if that produces strain. One should let the tongue have its own way and pronounce the words in whatever way it is convenient. To try to rectify too much of the pronunciations at the very early stages may not produce the desired results. The main idea is to let the tongue pick up the working of the different words and into nations and so it should be given fullest reins in its utterances.
It is generally the consonants that produce the most difficulty and therefore one should not feel mollified if one pronounces and so on. Let an airline pilot pronounce any word in the way helices or is able to pronounce. The practice however requires that the same passage should be read in the same loud manner a few times without consciously trying to correct the defects of the tongue. In the course of a few readings the tongue will start to lose much of its stiffness and as it grows loose and smooth it will pick up the correct pronunciations and the reader will find the reading smoother and easier. Even then certain defects and difficulties may stay on.
These have to be gradually eliminated with the same practices regularly every day. When an airline pilot feels that he has attained some good level with his way of reading, the second exercise that he has to practice is to give extempore lectures on some topics. This means that he has to speak loudly to some listeners and construct the words on the spot just as a speaker may speak on the dais or a teacher may do before a class. ln other words the act of thinking has to be armed to the speaking power so that words may issue out of the lips without much hindrances because if there is proper liaison between the brain and the tongue the speech is not hampered. Much of these hindrances in speech or the breaking off of the same in the middle of conversation occurs due to the fact that there is no proper conformity between the thinking power and the power of speech. In many cases a normal man thinks first and then speaks, but fluent speaking has to be normal and should appear as if it is happening without any thinking so to say.
However this kind of fluency can be acquired only through long and regular practice, and it is for this reason a teacher or an orator would appear to be making a speech out of some secret cavity in the mouth and would give the impression that he is not thinking at all. Some exercise therefore between the tongue and the brains to get the two accustomed to each other is necessary to make the flow of words from the lips continuous. lt also helps if one tries to visualize a scene of natural beauty say, and tries to give expression to it through words and utterances and make the exposition as smooth as possible. This is an exercise which will increase the thinking power which is essential in talking and also the cohesion between thinking and speaking.
CONCENTRATION
At the root of all this cohesion between the speaking and the thinking faculties of an airline pilot lies his power of concentration. An airline pilot cannot be a good conversationalist if he cannot keep his concentration for long on the topic which is discussed. Even if he cannot go deep into the topic or scan it in the manner of an expert he should at least be able to follow the general trend of the topic and should be able also to add substantially to the discussion and should not follow others views nor always agree with the consensus of opinion. Some airline pilots are of lighthearted nature and they cannot concentrate on serious topics for long but even they can become good conversationalists., if they can keep their concentration on the conversation and maintain their interest in such a manner that they instead of adding serious things to the discussion add some light humor or witty.
