Write a How-To Book - Why Writing How-To Books Means Profit
By Glen Ford
As part of your learning content delivery strategy, writing how-to books is a great way to create a profit generating asset.
There are many ways to generate profit from how-to books but they generally breakdown into two main groupings:
1. You can sell the book
2. You can give away the book.
Right about now you should be going huh? You can make a profit by giving your book away?
Yup, you sure can.
It might seem counter-intuitive but writing how-to books to sell is the most difficult way to profit from them. So let's get that out of the way first.
There are several techniques to sell your book. The first one that most people think of is the traditional route. Get an agent interested in your book and then let them sell to the traditional publisher. The publisher then pays you (less the agent's fifteen percent). And you go off to write your next how-to book. Or so the theory goes.
In fact, you'll find that it's up to you to sell your book. It's up to you to provide the marketing that interests readers -- and booksellers -- in buying your book.
Because of that exit from traditional marketing, the market niche previously dominated by vanity presses has become worthy of a revisit. In this market niche, you have the book printed by an on-demand publisher (or even by a traditional vanity press) and then sell the book yourself. There are several different sales chains that are now available to the ultra-small press - aka individual with a book.
Many of these sales chains use the internet either through an established presence -- Amazon, eBay, Craigslist, and ClickBank to pick a few. However, creating your own website and driving traffic to it is certainly an option. And one that is growing in popularity.
However, you can also sell your how-to book through more traditional physical sales chains. For example, you can sell "from the back of the room" or as one more product in an existing bricks and mortar store.
But don't underestimate how difficult it will be to make a profit by selling your how-to book. Very few books return their cost of production let alone make a profit.
The other and arguably more profitable method is not to sell your how-to book but to give it away. There are three basic ways to do that and profit from it.
The first is to give it away as a way of selling your services. Examples of this are using writing your how-to book specifically to give away - as a resume, as a portfolio or as a business card. Common to this technique is that you are using your how-to book as a "very soft" sales presentation. Basically, you are hoping that if the reader likes your book and the ideas you present, they will then hire you. The reader can experience your skill before paying for it and you don't waste time trying to sell to someone who won't like your product or service.
The second way to profit is to use your how-to book as a value give-away. For example, how-to books are often added as a bonus to improve sales of a high priced product. However, how-to eBooks can be used to power opt-in offers. Not only does the potential customer leave his or her contact information -- thus entering the sales funnel -- but they also experience a sample of your product or service. This has the advantage of helping to pre-sell them on the rest of your sales funnel.
Finally, you can write your how-to book to use as a publicity generator. By giving your book away you can generate a media-buzz which helps to sell your existing products or services.
The cool thing about writing how-to books is that no matter what technique you use, a well-written book will help to boost your reputation. And that alone is worth real money!
